Flipping through the annals of cinema, one easily discovers that King Kong was the first major monster to appear in cinema. It first appeared back in 1933 in the film King Kong produced and directed by Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack. So is he the first kaiju in history? Not exactly…
Actually, by kaiju, we mean a type of monster from Japanese science fiction, and just to be clear, King Kong is of U.S. origin. So, if we talk strictly about kaiju, Godzilla should be considered the first kajiu ever. Godzilla first appeared in the 1954 film of the same name, which, in fact, is considered the progenitor of films devoted to the legendary kaiju.
Godzilla first kaiju but when did all the others arrive?
After Godzilla, the cinema welcomed many other kaiju. A year after Godzilla, here came Angilas (big ankylosaur). Next came Rodan (1956), Varan (1958), and Mothra (1961). For the first film appearance of Gamera (a kind of giant tortoise), one of the most beloved kaiju, we have to wait until 1965, however.
Be that as it may, as confirmed in the recent film, Godzilla remains The King of Monsters. No one is on Godzilla’s level except King Kong….
