Carragher ‘baffled’ by ‘crazy’ Chelsea spending as Boehly somehow fails to address huge ‘problem’

Chelsea’s inability to score goals is “baffling” considering the amount of money they have spent in the last two transfer windows, says Jamie Carragher.

The Blues suffered a 1-0 defeat against Borussia Dortmund in Wednesday’s Champions League last-16 first leg.

Graham Potter’s side managed 21 shots and had more possession than the Bundesliga side but failed to convert their dominance into goals.

Questions are once again being asked about Kai Havertz, who has been leading the line for Chelsea with a great lack of conviction.

While Havertz is not a natural No. 9, his goalscoring return while playing through the middle is alarming for a player who cost around £72million.

In 30 matches across all competitions this season, the 23-year-old has a measly six goals, including one in seven Champions League encounters.

Chelsea have spent an absolute fortune since Todd Boehly bought the club, but Potter is still without a recognised goal scorer.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was brought in last summer and has struggled in front of goal, while Romelu Lukaku was shipped out on loan to Inter Milan and it seems unlikely that he will return to lead the line next season.

RB Leipzig and France attacker Christopher Nkunku is expected to join in the summer transfer window, but like Havertz, is a player without a set position and is definitely not an out-and-out striker.

The fact Boehly has spent so much money, yet Chelsea cannot score, has left former Liverpool defender Carragher ‘baffled’.

Joking that Boehly tried to sign the whole Dortmund team after the defeat, Carragher explains why it is “crazy” they don’t have a centre-forward despite spending £600m in two transfer windows.

Carragher said during CBS Sports‘ Champions League coverage: “It’s just come through on social media, Todd Boehly’s put in a bid for the whole Borussia Dortmund squad!

“When you actually think of the money Chelsea have spent, not just in [January], in the August window as well, and to think you’re playing a full season without a recognised, top-quality centre forward, it’s just baffling,” he added.

“You think: ‘It’s £600m being spent and you don’t have someone at the top end of the pitch who can score a goal’.

“Chelsea’s massive problem this season has been scoring goals. I think they’ve scored just more than maybe one goal a game in the Premier League, and that’s nowhere near enough for a club the size of Chelsea and also the revenue that’s been spent on that team, that’s a massive problem.

“Considering Chelsea have spent £600m and they don’t have a centre-forward is just crazy and that game summed it up. They need someone who can put the ball into the back of the net.”

It will be interesting to see how Chelsea attack the summer transfer window after adding so many new players.

Nkunku is set to join, though the Blues remain linked with Napoli striker Victor Osimhen.

The Nigerian international is one of the most in-demand players in world football and should he leave in the summer, will likely cost at least £100m.
